U.S. stocks ended lower on Monday, as investors await the too-close-to-call presidential election on Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average went down 257.59 points or 0.6% to end at 41794.60, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The S&P 500 fell 16.11 points or 0.3% to close at 5712.69.

Markets worldwide have been fixated on what the election will mean for U.S. economic, monetary and trade policy, as well as geopolitics.

On Election Day, the Nasdaq Composite surged 1.4% to close at 18,439 and is now within 1.5% of its October 29 all-time high. The S&P 500 was up 1.2% to 5,782, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1% to 42,221.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the other major stock indexes traded higher Tuesday, as Wall Street braced for today's presidential election results. Artificial intelligence giant Palantir Technologies soared on the stock market today after the company's earnings report.
