Pittsburgh Penguins’ defenseman Erik Karlsson remained off the ice on Monday due to an undisclosed injury that has prevented him from participating in any of the team’s practices during its ongoing training camp.

There is a fairly high degree of intensity in the Pittsburgh Penguins training camp this season. Head coach Mike Sullivan and the Penguins failed to make the playoffs in each of the last two seasons and they have not made it past the first round of the playoffs since the 2017-18 season.

Karlsson hasn’t come back to the ice since then, being kept off the ice in the name of the rehab process. Sullivan is optimistic that Karlsson’s ailment won’t be long-lasting, but the team has been starting to take steps to prepare for how they might start the regular season without their star defender.
