Apple’s Magic peripherals have consistently received heavy criticism for years now. The mouse is designed incredibly unintuitively, with the Lighting port on its underside, out of all places. This obviously makes recharging it a pain, and it’s absurd that you can’t use it while it’s being charged.

However, the code once again refers to Magic Mouse 2 and Magic Trackpad 2 but with “.USB” at the end, which led the publication to speculate that Apple may be planning to simply add a USB-C port to the current Magic accessories instead of a design refresh or new features.

Apple may soon release new versions of the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad, according to code found in the iOS 18.1 release

As noted by Aaron Perris on X, iOS 18.1 RC includes references to a “new” Magic Mouse 2, Magic Trackpad 2 and also an updated Magic Keyboard. Technically, the current Magic Mouse and Trackpad are already version 2 ( Apple refers to the Lightning versions introduced in 2015 as “2” ). So what exactly is new about today’s findings?

Over the past year, Apple has gone nearly all-in on USB-C, finally ditching the Lightning port on the iPhone and, more recently, its entire AirPods lineup. Nevertheless, the company has yet to update one very odd set of outliers: its Mac accessories.
