Shadow Home Secretary James Cleverly has said he will not accept a frontbench role from the next leader of the Conservative Party, when they are unveiled on Saturday. The winning candidate - out of Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick - is expected to carry out an immediate reshuffle of the top Tory team.

The former home secretary said he would return to the backbenches regardless of who won the Conservative leadership election.

The UK's battle-scarred Conservatives on Saturday elected "anti-woke" candidate Kemi Badenoch as its new head, making her the first black leader of a major UK party.

Kemi Badenoch is the new leader of the Conservative Party, defeating Robert Jenrick in the final round of voting. Badenoch, who was raised in Nigeria, is the first black woman to lead a major political party in the UK and takes over a Conservative Party reeling from its worst ever election defeat.
