The U.S. Southeast grappled Sunday with rising death tolls, a lack of vital supplies in isolated, flood-stricken areas and the widespread loss of homes and property while the devastating toll of Hurricane Helene became more clear and officials warned of a lengthy and difficult rebuild.

Authorities struggled to get water and other supplies to isolated, flood-stricken areas across the U.S. Southeast in the wake of Hurricane Helene as the death toll from the storm rose to nearly 100. A North Carolina county that includes the mountain city of Asheville reported 30 people killed due to the storm,

The White House said that the president's actions make federal funding available to affected individuals​ in several counties.

Those affected in Tampa Bay counties are eligible for the aid, which includes grants for temporary housing and home repairs.

President Joe Biden has approved Virginia’s request for an emergency declaration, making federal assistance available to several Southwest Virginia counties after Hurricane Helene caused damage across the area.
